Kermac Macmaghan : ウィキペディア英語版
Kermac Macmaghan
Kermac Macmaghan was a late 13th century Scotsman. In 1262, he is stated to have aided the Earl of Ross in a particularly vicious attack into the Western Isles. The attack, recorded in a 13th-century Norse saga, was likely conducted on behalf of the King of Scots, who wished to incorporate Isles into his own kingdom. The following year, the King of Norway launched an expedition into the Isles, to reassert Norwegian dominance in the region. The campaign proved to be an utter failure, and after the Norwegian king's departure and death the same year, the King of Scots forced the submission of the leading magnates of the Isles. In 1264, Kermac is recorded to have received compensation for services rendered. He is thought to be an ancestor of the Clan Matheson and Clan Mackenzie, and his record of 1264 is taken to be the earliest record of the clan-name of the Mathesons.
== Background ==

During the mid 13th century, Alexander II, King of Scots (d. 1249), and his son and successor, Alexander III, King of Scots (d. 1286), made several attempts to incorporate the Western Isles into the Scottish realm.〔Reid 2004. See also: Stringer 2004.〕 During this period, these islands formed part of the Kingdom of the Isles, which was a dependency of the far-flung Kingdom of Norway. The independence of the turbulent Norse-Gaelic magnates of the region, and the lurking threat of their nominal overlord, the formidable Hákon Hákonarson, King of Norway (d. 1263), was a source of concern for the Scots.
